NAVI MUMBAI: After facing flak over the deteriorating air quality, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has begun issuing notices to errant builders for violation of dust mitigation compliances, like regular fogging, at construction sites. NMMC's additional city engineer Shirish Aradwad said a penalty of Rs 10/sqm will be levied on errant builders. "Our teams will visit construction sites, companies and quarries to check the sources of pollution," he said. Some six quarries are under the lens. NMMC city engineer Sanjay Desai said the civic body and the regional transport office will soon initiate action against open dumpers and trucks carrying earth, which have been found to be major sources of pollution. The NMMC had issued similar notices to some industrial units last year, but no further action was taken. On Saturday afternoon, the air quality index (AQI ) at Nerul was 'poor' with the PM10 level at 155, nearly five times the limit recommended by the WHO. Uran reported an AQI of 386 and a PM10 level of 419.
